Description
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is one of the lines of the server

February 2008. It was released after the introduction of Windows Server 2003.
It was however released for the second time in 2009 in the name of Windows
Server 2008 R2.
The Windows Server 2008 involves the same code base as Windows
Vista in its making, due to which it is similar to Windows Vista as far as its
function and architecture is concerned. Moreover, as the code base is same as
Windows Vista it comes with similar features of security management and
technical and administration.
Before opting for the installation of Windows Server 2008 it is
always better to get a thorough knowledge of the various editions available. In
addition, you should also know about the related hardware equipment. You should
also know about the options for an upgrade which come with each edition. Here
we will discuss the Windows Server 2008 editions and also the suggested
requirements of hardware.
Features
Windows Server 2008 – Standard Edition
This is an entry level server offering from Windows Server 2008.
The best part of this edition it that it is less expensive. It is available
only in 64-bit versions and supports up to 4 processors and 32GB of RAM. It is
ideal for small businesses or SMBs and is best for providing web, DNS, print,
application services and file. However, as far as support for clustering is
concerned it is not found in this edition.
Windows Server 2008 – Enterprise Edition
As compared to Standard edition the Windows Server 2008
Enterprise edition gives fabulous scalability and functionality. Moreover,
unlike the Windows Server Standard edition, this server can support up to 8
processors and up to 2TB of RAM.
In addition, you also get support for up to 8 nodes in this
edition. The good thing is that you can upgrade Windows Server 2000, Windows
Server 2003, and Windows Server 2000 Standard Edition etc to this edition.
Windows Web Server 2008
Windows Web server is basically a version of Windows Server 2008
which is built for giving services of the web. These services include IIS or
Internet Information Services along with services like SMTP and Telnet. It
comes with only 64-bit version and can support up to 4 processors. The RAM is
32GB.
However, this web server does not contain many features that are
present in other editions like Bitlocker drive encryption, Windows Internet
Naming Services, multipath I/O and SAN management.
Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition – The best server out
there
The Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition is considered to be
the best of the Windows Server 2008 range of products. It requires not only
stability but it also requires high levels of uptime. Windows Server 2008
Datacenter edition is attached to the hardware with the application of HAL or
Hardware Abstraction Layers. The fact is that you can only obtain Datacenter
edition as part of the purchase of hardware. With other versions, the editions
of Datacenter come with 64-bit version and supports up to 2TB RAM. This edition
can support at least 8 processors and up to a maximum of 64. You can upgrade
your Datacenter editions of Windows 200 and 2003 to Windows Server 2008
Datacenter Edition.
·
The Datacenter edition is designed specifically for the large
enterprise market. It is different to the enterprise edition in terms of a
number of virtual machines. You can use a unlimited number of virtual machines
with a single license in Datacenter edition.
·
Usually, a license of the Datacenter is linked to a physical
server in the form of OEM which means that you can only get them together. The
reason is that these servers are very expensive and can cost tens or even
hundreds of thousand dollars.
System Requirements
These are minimum system requirements for
installing Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Datacenter.
Before you even invest in time and resources for the
installation and downloading of Windows Server 2008 you need to have the right
knowledge of the state of hardware required to run it.
·
Processor You need to have a
minimum 1GHz (x86) or 1.4 GHz (x64) processor. If you can get a 2GHz or faster
processor it is better. In case you are using an Itanium-based system you need
to have Itanium 2 processor.
·
Memory You need to have a
minimum 512 MB RAM. However it is recommended that you should use a system with
2GB RAMS or higher RAM. For a standard edition, you can use a maximum of 32 GB
while for an Enterprise and Datacenter edition you can use 2TB.
·
Available disk space The
disk space should be minimum 10GB. However, the recommended capacity of RAM is
40GB or greater. However, systems having RAM of more than 16 GB will need more
amount of disk space in order to accommodate dump files, paging, and
hibernation.
·
Drive – DVD-ROM drive You
need to have a monitor with higher resolution, a keyboard, and a Microsoft
Mouse. It is always better to go for recommended values rather than the minimum
values of system requirements if you are looking for good levels of
performance. You can run a Windows Server in 512 MB of RAM but it is very much
possible that you may not get the optimum level of performance with this
configuration.
